Polyester vs cotton moving blankets: which your crew should buy
Quick answers
- Polyester moving blankets are the everyday truck pad: they shed less, take moisture better, and clean up easier between jobs.
- Cotton moving blankets drape softer and grab corners better, so they suit finished furniture and jobs where touch matters.
- Shell fabric is the real difference between the two; the batting inside is usually recycled cotton in both.
- A practical setup is polyester as the base set on every truck, with a cotton set reserved for delicate pieces.
Polyester and cotton moving blankets protect furniture the same way; the shell fabric decides how a pad wears, handles moisture, and treats a finished piece. Polyester is the everyday truck pad: it sheds less, takes moisture better, and cleans up easier when crews use the same pads job after job. Cotton drapes softer and grabs corners better, which makes it the pad for finished furniture, nicer homes, and jobs where touch matters.
What a moving blanket is made of
Every moving pad has two parts, and buyers should compare them separately. The shell is the outer fabric you see. The filling, usually called batting, is the cushioning inside.
Shells come in woven or non-woven polyester, cotton, cotton-polyester blends, and recycled fabrics such as denim. According to US Cargo Control, woven shells are threaded, which makes them more durable, while non-woven shells are pressed and heated, which keeps them cheaper and common on economy pads. The filling is most often recycled cotton batting, and quilted stitching in a zig-zag or chevron pattern holds that batting in place so it doesn’t shift or bunch under the furniture.
Pad weight is measured per dozen, and it tracks with build quality. Extra Space Storage puts economy blankets at around 3 to 4 pounds each and premium blankets at 7 pounds or more. US Cargo Control’s lineup runs from 43 to 65 pounds per dozen for non-woven economy pads, to 85 pounds per dozen for a woven mid-range pad, up to 95 pounds per dozen for its heaviest fully woven cotton pad. Our guide to moving blanket sizes and weights does the per-pad math and shows how to compare listings.

Why polyester is the everyday truck pad
Polyester earns its place on the truck because it tolerates abuse. Run it hard on local jobs, apartment turns, commercial work, and dirty load days. It sheds less, takes moisture better, and cleans up easier when the same pads get used job after job.
Extra Space Storage notes that economy blankets are often made with non-woven polyester, and describes polyester shells as a bit slicker and stiffer than cotton but very durable. If your crews drag pads across truck floors, load in the rain, or wrap garage and outdoor items, polyester keeps its shape and looks cleaner between washes.
Our polyester moving pads run $100 per dozen. The super premium black, yellow, and red lines are 72 x 80 inches and 85 pounds per dozen with a premium polyester shell, in the same weight class as US Cargo Control’s woven mid-range pad.
When cotton is the right call
Cotton is the pad you want for finished furniture, nicer homes, and jobs where touch matters. It drapes softer, grabs corners better, and gives crews a more forgiving layer when they’re wrapping pieces customers are watching closely.
Extra Space Storage describes cotton blankets as having a softer touch that’s gentle on fine finishes. U-Haul’s heavy-duty quilted pad, built for delicate items and long-term storage, uses multiple layers of compressed recycled cotton fibers with double stitching and weighs more than five pounds. The top pad in US Cargo Control’s lineup, at 95 pounds per dozen, is 100 percent cotton. When a customer’s dining table or heirloom dresser is the piece in front of your crew, cotton is the safer wrap.
Our cotton moving pads come in baby blue, green, and red at $85 per dozen.
Care, washing, and drying
Both materials hold up to repeated use. U-Haul describes its pads as reusable and washable, and Extra Space Storage notes that most moving blankets are washable or at least easy to hose off. Polyester has the easier care routine, since it takes moisture better and cleans up faster, which matters when pads go straight back on the truck the next morning.
Cotton pads need a full dry before you stack and store them; a damp stack of cotton comes out musty. One caution applies to any dark pad in either material: Extra Space Storage warns that rich dyes can transfer to light upholstery if a blanket gets damp. That’s rare with quality pads, but let wet pads dry before they touch a white sofa.
Mixing both materials on one truck
A practical setup is to carry both materials on purpose. Run polyester as the base set that handles every job, and keep a smaller cotton set ready for finished pieces. Consumer guides suggest planning at least one pad per large item and two or three for oversized or fragile pieces; our guide on how many moving blankets a truck needs turns that into per-truck stocking numbers for a moving company.
Colors do the separating. Assign each material its own colors by crew, truck, route, or service line, and pads come back to the right pile at the end of the day. Our lines give you room to do that: black, yellow, and red super premium polyester; green, orange, and pink polyester; baby blue, green, and red cotton. Even the two red lines stay distinct, since red polyester carries blue trim and red cotton carries grey trim. You can also match pad colors to your brand, and build your mix from both collections.
Beyond moving day: other uses and insulation
What else can moving blankets be used for?
Between jobs, pads keep working. Extra Space Storage lists covering items in storage, lining vehicle interiors and pet areas, protecting floors and furniture during painting and remodels, camping, and keeping one in a vehicle as an emergency blanket. For a moving company, storage and floor protection matter most: a pad that’s off the truck can still cover a stored piece or shield a warehouse floor.
Do moving blankets insulate?
A little. Thick pads muffle noise and take the edge off cold. Extra Space Storage suggests hanging one on a wall or door to dampen sound between rooms, or laying one under a sleeping bag for insulation from cold ground. Moving blankets are protective padding, not rated insulation or true soundproofing, so treat those as backup uses rather than selling points.
