Moving blanket sizes and weights: what heavy-duty really means
Quick answers
- The standard moving blanket size is 72 x 80 inches, large enough to wrap most furniture and appliances.
- Blanket weight is sold per dozen, so divide by 12 to compare pads: economy pads run about 30 to 45 lb per dozen and heavy ones 72 to 90.
- Heavy-duty has no fixed meaning, so compare the listed weight per dozen, shell, stitching, and binding instead of the label.
- Our super premium polyester pads measure 72 x 80 inches and weigh 85 lb per dozen, about 7 lb per pad.
The standard moving blanket measures 72 x 80 inches, and suppliers quote its weight per dozen rather than per pad. Learn those two numbers and most listings make sense, because labels like deluxe, premium, and heavy-duty cover a wide spread of real weights.
What are the standard dimensions for a moving blanket?
The standard size is 72 x 80 inches. MoveBuddha’s moving blanket guide gives 72 x 80 as the standard that fits most furniture and appliances, U-Haul’s quilted pad comes in at 72 x 80, and the deluxe blankets at UBOXES list 72 x 80. Our super premium polyester pads are 72 x 80 as well.
At that size, one pad drapes over a dresser, sofa, or large appliance with enough material left to fold around corners and edges. Smaller cuts exist for compact work: Lone Star Dollies’ pad catalog includes a 45 x 72 inch pad for small pieces, and U-Haul’s basic furniture pad measures 68 x 85, close to standard but not identical. Dimensions vary by supplier, so read the listed size on any listing instead of assuming it matches the standard.
Which size fits which item:
- Full-size 72 x 80 pads: sofas, dressers, dining tables, refrigerators, washers, and other large appliances.
- Smaller pads around 45 x 72: chairs, nightstands, end tables, and compact pieces where a full pad bunches up.
- Oversized or fragile pieces: plan on two or more full-size pads per item so seams, corners, and edges stay covered.
How heavy is a moving blanket?
A single moving blanket weighs roughly 2.5 to 7.5 lb depending on grade. Suppliers usually state weight per dozen, so divide the listed number by 12 to get the weight of one pad. A 65 lb per dozen line works out to about 5.4 lb per pad; an 85 lb per dozen line works out to about 7.1 lb per pad.
UBOXES publishes the clearest version of the weight scale, measured per dozen:
- Lightweight: 30 to 45 lb per dozen, for basic coverage and short-term use.
- Medium: 54 to 65 lb per dozen, for standard household and office items.
- Heavy: 72 to 90 lb per dozen, for maximum cushioning and repeated use.
Two U-Haul products show how the math lands in practice. Its basic furniture pad weighs 2.45 lb per pad, about 29 lb per dozen, squarely in the lightweight band. Its quilted pad weighs 5.25 lb per pad, about 63 lb per dozen, in the medium band.
Heavier pads can contain more material or thicker padding and provide greater cushioning, as the UBOXES guide notes. Shell fabric, stitching, and binding decide how long that cushioning lasts, so compare them alongside weight.
What heavy-duty actually means on a label
The words on a label have no fixed weight behind them. Lines carrying deluxe, premium, or heavy-duty labels span about 60 to 80 lb per dozen across supplier catalogs, and the pecking order between labels isn’t consistent either: Lone Star’s premium ProFormer line outweighs UBOXES’ deluxe line by 5 to 10 lb per dozen. Verified examples from supplier listings:
| Listing | Label used | Listed size | Listed weight | Per-pad math |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| U-Haul Furniture Pad | Furniture pad | 68 x 85 in | 2.45 lb per pad | about 29 lb per dozen |
| U-Haul Quilted Pad | Quilted pad | 72 x 80 in | 5.25 lb per pad | about 63 lb per dozen |
| UBOXES Deluxe blankets | Deluxe | 72 x 80 in | 65 lb per dozen | about 5.4 lb per pad |
| Lone Star ProMover 12-pack | Premium | not stated on page | 60 to 65 lb per dozen | about 5.0 to 5.4 lb per pad |
| Lone Star ProFormer 12-pack | Premium | not stated on page | 70 to 75 lb per dozen | about 5.8 to 6.3 lb per pad |
| Lone Star ProChamp 12-pack | Heavy-duty | not stated on page | 75 to 80 lb per dozen | about 6.3 to 6.7 lb per pad |
| Our super premium polyester pads | Super premium | 72 x 80 in | 85 lb per dozen | about 7.1 lb per pad |
Labels that sound top-tier can sit 10 to 15 lb per dozen apart. Compare the stated weight per dozen, convert it to per-pad weight, and only then compare prices.
What weight doesn’t tell you
MovingProtect’s buyer guide warns against choosing a blanket on weight alone and recommends comparing material, weight, construction, and intended use together. Three construction details carry most of that difference:
- Shell: woven polyester or cotton holds up to repeated use; non-woven fabric is the budget option for lighter or one-time work. Polyester runs tougher, sheds less, and cleans up easier; cotton is softer and more pliable around finished furniture. Our polyester vs cotton moving blankets guide goes deeper on shell choice.
- Filling: pro-grade pads commonly use recycled cotton batting. Lone Star’s ProFormer and ProChamp lines use 100% recycled cotton filler, and U-Haul’s basic pad blends recycled denim with polyester.
- Stitching and binding: quilting keeps the filling from shifting or bunching, and reinforced stitching at the edges and corners resists fraying. Lone Star specs its zigzag double-lock stitching by name, and MovingProtect tells buyers to check the quilting pattern, stitching consistency, edge binding, and corner construction on any pad intended for repeated use.
A checklist for comparing listings
When two listings land in front of you, run through these points:
- Listed size in inches, and whether it is the full 72 x 80 or a smaller cut.
- Listed weight per dozen, converted to per-pad weight by dividing by 12.
- Shell material, and whether it is woven or non-woven.
- Filling type, and whether the quilting pattern will hold it in place.
- Stitching and binding at the edges and corners.
- Price per pad: divide the pack price by the pad count. Single retail pads commonly list around $10 to $20, with heavy-duty pads at $15 to $30, according to MoveBuddha. Lone Star’s 12-packs run about $16.25 to $16.66 per pad. Buying by the dozen or in bulk usually drops the per-pad price.
Once you know the grade you want, the next question is quantity. Our guide on how many moving blankets a truck needs walks through the stocking math.
What we stock at Jonathan Richards Moving Supplies
Our super premium polyester line lands in the heavy band: 72 x 80 inches and 85 lb per dozen, with a premium polyester shell, at $100 per dozen. That works out to about 7.1 lb and $8.33 per pad. Choose black with blue trim, yellow with black trim, or red with blue trim, and use the colors to separate pads by crew, truck, route, or service line. The full line is on the polyester moving blankets collection page.
We also stock cotton moving pads at $85 per dozen in baby blue with pink trim, green with black trim, and red with grey trim. Ask about the size and weight of the cotton pads before you order; we only list specs we have confirmed.
